Why do we read and write fantasy?

Why Fantasy?

First let me tell you a little about myself, I am Craig A. Price Jr. and I am a writer. I am starting this new blog to unite all the fantasy authors out there, famous or not, to one place where we can discuss different things about fantasy. Why do we love it so? I have completed 3 fantasy novels and 1 novella. I am currently seeking representation and my works are available on Wattpad, where one of my novels has received over 2.5 Million reads.

Why fantasy? This is a question that has been asked so many times. If you are a fantasy author, and you've told others that you enjoy writing the genre -- I am sure you have received the same response as I have.

Why fantasy?

I have been asked this by people who enjoy the occasional thriller, romance, literary, or like some of my older family non-fiction.

What is it about fantasy that really gets our blood pumping? Why do we like to read it, and most importantly why do we feel at home when we are writing it?

For most of us, we have always loved the extraordinary, but for others it swept us by storm. One of my favorite things in fantasy, besides the magic and wonderful creatures, is scenery. I love the outdoors and the scenery really gets my mind moving. Many people call me old fashioned as I sit outside listening to my record player, sipping tea, and smoking on my long stem pipe. I love things that are old, I love typewriters and rotary phones.

When I walk through a forest, such as the picture above, I feel free. I am open to all things around me and the crisp air feels wonderful through my lungs. I grew up in Washington state, and these days I miss it so much. The crisp dry air was wonderful. Now, I walk outside and pour in sweat -- not exactly my paradise.

I write fantasy because it is somewhere I want to be. I do not want to be in this technology induced world where there is so little care for human interaction, but so much care in what is the next big thing. It seems anything these days to make our life easier, and yet -- nobody is happy. When we take away all of that, and get back to values, nature, and caring for the humans next to you, it is a wonderful place to be.

Yes, I love the creatures, I love dragons and elves and everything else.

Fantasy is also a gateway, it is an entirely new world that we create. In a fantasy we have all the genres and we're not restricted. This is another reason why there are many of us that flock to this type of writing. Do you like writing humor, but don't want to write an entire novel with it? Do you love action, but don't want it crawling through every page? Do you love thrillers, but couldn't stand devoting an entire book around it with so much action that you can't take a breath? Do you love romance, a true romantic at heart, but don't want every page bringing emotional tension? Do you wish to convey the inevitability of war and how it has shaped our history?

Fantasy is all of these genres rolled up into one. It is a place we wish we could head off to, and some of us wish to never return.

Why do we write fantasy?

Because one genre isn't enough. We want the gorgeous scenery, romance, action, thriller, war, humor, and a place that takes our mind somewhere unbelievable that we never want to leave because despite how complex the world is, at times it is much simpler than our own.
